Photo Workshop in Cuba August or December 2018

Next Photo Workshop in Havana : 20 to 27 August or 1 to 9 December 2018. NEW PHOTO LOCATIONS!!
Special focus for “street night photos” and “photo road movie” during the 8 days and nights full immersion.
Pendant ce stage photo, une attention particulière aux photos de nuit dans La Havane et road movie en périphérie et au bord de mer.

Participants in these workshops, limited to 7 people per tour, are free to choose between either black and white or color photos with digital or film camera. They spend 8 days and 8 nights, with safe accommodation facilities, in a total immersion at La Havana, Cuba.

Photo Journalism or Poetry style are the two main theme of the workshop – participants will focus on developing a storyline using the pictures taken throughout the trip. The theme of each participant’s narrative will be individually chosen at the beginning of the workshop. The members of the group use to work together to select the final 30 pictures that are the most representative of each photographer’s work. Pictures are to be taken during field excursions as Cartier Bresson use to do it himself. Each day is organized with visits in the field, at daylight or moonlight, at dusk or dawn, according to the needs and inspiration of the group.

The workshop takes place day and night in all areas of La Havana. Every evening at sunset we’ll go on the Malecón, the symbol of Havana, this vast seafront, with its colourful colonial buildings and skyscrapers of the 50s, facing America. The Malecón is the “rendez vous” of all Cubans, who come here every evening to watch the sea, dreaming, listening to the waves, music and conversations. We will participate in this passion and this nostalgia that give the city a quirky, timeless and unique charm. Also a special street photos on night during all the evenings in the Vedado and Central Havana aerea! By day we have also photo road moovie around the sea, rich and poor area.

Every other night, a slide show is organized in order to comment, criticize and analyze the pictures taken on previous days. This slideshow is the very basis of the photographic workshop. It allows each one to get closer every day to his or hers aesthetic, technical and artistic desires.

Nicolas Pascarel lived in Havana in 1996 and 1997, at the neighbourhood of El Vedado. He has produced a work entitled ‘Moros y Cristianos’, which was presented in various galleries and international meetings of photography in the world: France, Italy, Spain, Germany, USA … This work has been exhibited twice at the prestigious Fototeca Cuba (Photography Museum of Havana) in 1999 and 2001. Nicolas Pascarel also led a seminar on photography at the Higher Institute of Art in Havana in 2001 in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of Cuba, the Cuban National Center of Photography, the Embassy of France in Cuba and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As in all the other workshops I teach, my ultimate goal is to help each participant to create an appealing body of work with personal strong individual images. Each student will be encouraged to develop his or her own photographic language and to search for the invisible thread that ties his or her images together. I’ll help you to improve your ability to see and create new photographs, to discover your hidden potential. It will definitely be a valuable educational experience where you will develop the skills to look at your own work more critically, to appreciate and discuss yours and other people’s work by learning a new visual vocabulary. Our final objective is to produce a series of revealing; lasting images that will display a sense of the place, of its people and traditions.

Price for the photo workshop: 1200 euro

The price will include the tuition of the photo workshop. The accommodation is not included in the quoted price. Participants can stay in a double room in casa particular (home stay) in the  Vedado neighbourhood, in downtown Havana or in hôtel Paseo Habana also in Vedado and in front of the sea. El Vedado is in the heart of the city, a quiet, residential and shaded neighbourhood. I can, on request, put you in contact with this type of housing, cheap and very friendly. It is preferable for the workshop if all participants are housed in the same neighbourhood, a few meters from each other, to live together in full this adventure closer to the Cuban population.

A visa is required to enter Cuba. It can be bought at any Cuban embassy or consulate.
